Hello everyone, I am pleased to announce the launch of our new Fastlane beta!

A while ago we committed to upgrading Fastlane and recently we have put this into action. A link below will take you to a beta for the new system. Feel free to jump on and have a play around and post any feedback you have here, your current Fastlane username and password should work to get you in then you are free to post/comment at your will.

There are a few things we would like to note before jumping on
- During the course of the Beta Fastlane will run as normal here, we will announce when we are officially migrating at a later date.
- No data entered in the beta will be saved, only data in the current Fastlane forum will be transferred once we officially go live.
- As no data is being saved in the beta, no new users will have access to the beta and no users can be created in the beta.
- This beta is partly to get feedback but also to find bugs. If there are any issues please be patient we will work to fix them as soon as possible. Better to find them now than when we go live!

Note to moderators: Please test your perms and ensure you can do everything on the beta that you can in the current system if there are any perms you are lacking please make them known!

Have fun! www.fastlane.com.au/betaforum/

Cheers,

alake

Just gave it a try. Mod perms seem to work fine. Much easier (user friendly) method of dealing with spammers than the current system.
Cheers,

Mick

Is there an "active topics" or "new posts" option that I can't find?

"Active discussions" is near the bottom of the main forum page above the "Information" section it should be visible by default but you may have to expand it with the little button to the left of its heading. That shows the 5 most recent posts and any other forums with new posts will have red stars.

Hope that helps!

Is there a better way?

Most forums have a simple "new posts" button - similar to the "active topics" on the left of this page, that lists ALL the threads with new posts (or new threads) in one list, no matter how many (it can go on for several pages on popular sites).
Cheers,

Mick

If you look in the General section you'll see hundreds of questions and 90% of them are Technical.
It might just be about a light globe or a tyre so alot of people think that isnt very technical, lets put it in General.
I'd like to see us sorting the conversations into sections, I'm not being too OCD am I?

General Discussion
Paint Panel & Body Trim
Engine Driveline & Exhaust
Interior & Electrical
Suspension Brakes & Wheels
Buy Swap & Sell
Rare Spares

I'd like to see the Members Rides section and the Car Shows Events & Club Runs section brought into the Holden forums page.
Have separate ones for the Ford section.
Right now no one seems to use them much in fact I never visit the All Forums page at all.
I go straight to the Holden Forums page like most of us here do so we never actually look at the main page.

Thanks for updating us, its all an improvement so far.

The "My Topics" link takes you to all topics you are following, and one of the tabs on that page is "Active Topics" it allows you to select the period of time you want to look through (up to a month).

A concern with splitting the forums into that many sections is the current posts would not be able to be split, unless someone manually went though and categorised every post. As well as due to a low rate of posts we may end up with a lot of empty forums for a quite a while. In the mean time we will focus on updating the software. However if there are a few of you who want to second this splitting idea we will look into how we can do it.

Cheers,

I get where you're coming from with the hesitation to split the topics.
While it would make sense, it is a helluva lot of work, as there's over 30,000 topics.

I think as long as the search function works well, and people can access the last 12 years of info, then it's probably not needed for the volume of posts. You see the odd old post reincarnated occasionally on the current board, so people have managed to work out the search function on there.

Fastlane is more about quality rather than quantity anyway.

The active topics thing is good. I didn't realise it was there. It also defaults the cutoff to the last visit, which is very handy.

I'm happy with it.
Cheers,

Mick

The biggest problem for those not so computer literate like myself has been the complexity of posting photo's.
I have noticed I am not the only one who has found it just to difficult.

Will I be able to post photo's with the simplicity of posting them on Facebook for example?

If this could be achieved I am sure this already informative forum would be vastly improved.

As long as posting pics is easier,I like it. I'd also like to see an 'ignore' function so you can skip some members posts

There are 2 ways to post images, one of them is your standard img and /img tags like here

The other way is through the "my albums" section. Using my albums you can browse you computer and upload images similar to the way you do on facebook. Then once you go to post a new topic or reply to another topic, you can select which album images you wish to be displayed.

We will have to have a limit on the number of images you can add to an album to prevent people from uploading too many and wasting space however we are open to suggestions as to what this limit should be (default is 5 albums of max 10 images each)

You can also upload by checking the "Attach files to this post?" checkbox before clicking "post", after clicking post it will pop up and allow you to upload any of the file types listed on that upload page including.

This method however will put clickable thumbnails of the images at the bottom of the post unlike the other formats which have the images embedded within the text.

There's also free 3rd party extensions that can be incorporated into the forum, to make it much easier, like this:
