Ive just picked up a tidy original HG kingswood 179 3 on the tree-my question is I want to put a sbc in it and retain the 3 speed column shift.can I change the input shaft of the gearbox to suit the 307 or am I pushing s*** uphill with this?

You can either change the input shaft or find a V8 3spd box. It will bolt straight in where the 6cyl one does and you'll need a Dellow or CRS Chev or 308TH to Aussie V8 4spd (or 3spd same thing) bellhousing for a PUSH fork clutch setup.
Note - a Chev in a HK-HG sits with its back end about 3/4" further back than a 253 or 308, so the gearbox will move back also by this amount. The column shift linkage should be able to accommodate this but you'll need to get a new tailshaft (which you'll need anyway) and put a V8 banjo yoke on your diff or get a V8 banjo centre.
A 308 will be easier as you'll be able to use a factory bellhousing and a factory tailshaft. |

Also, for the Chev engines the gearbox crossmember has the rear mount slots offset to the passenger side by about 12mm, as the engine is offset in the engine bay by this amount.
The 253/308 has these slots located symmetrically around the crossmember centreline.
