my 351 cleveland at around 1500 - 1800 goes tick tick tick, at first i was told it was me preload on rockers but this was checked at great expence and found not to be the case, i installed steetterra rockers to get rid of the original rocker clatter, but there is still a tick tick tick, the cam power range is 2200 is it possible that this is the sound it will always make? it seems to come from the back of the engine and i hear it through the firewall, every machanic says it sounds ace others say its the sound extractors make - but i drive it every day and it's a tick tick tick.

Could it be a lifter? Other than that check for leaks on the extractors themselves. A common problem is where the 2 pieces join on the drivers side.

paul, new cam and lifters also replaced one lifter on the spring that broke during the first 3 weeks of the engine run-in. when i dropped the engine in i also put the extractors in the engine bay before this i had the join welded up just to be smart arse

Noisy lifters. I have the same problem on mine. Had the Street Terras adjusted on Sunday and it was VERY noisy on start-up. Quietend down heaps after a drive. There is still a momentary rattle when stone cold. I am switching to a 88 degree (the original)

correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't oil thicken when it gets hotter, and do lifters sound noisy at the top of the engine? also wouldn't say 25-60 oil thicken and pump up the lifters to get rid of the noise?

I think you will find oil thins as it gets hotter. That's why old oil looses its viscosity. Pull your dip stick out when the oil is cold and it will cling to it, do it when the oil is hot and it will just run off.

OK then, so does my theory of thin, warm oil getting ino the lifters and quietening them down make sense? I have misplaced my 88 degree thermostat so I haven yet put it in.

Found it, put it in and it worked. No more noisy lifters! But its running a bit HOT for my liking now.

it is also possible that the tick tick tick noise is a cam bearing, because you said you had the engine rebuilt, it just made me think about everytime ive rebuilt an engine i dont even give the cam bearings a second glance so probably who ever rebuilt the

Thanks bill, i'm using an 82 highflow, just to see if it running hotter changes the clatter i put some cardboard in front of the radiator and went around to block a few times also changed to a thiner oil, seemed to make no difference and does sound as if

Jordy a engine builder close to where i live hot tanked the engine and matched my pistons they also installed the cam bearings. I then took it home and started to assemble my self until i found the cam would not fit all the way. After taking it back to th

Did you use cam honey on the new camshaft? This is essenial to allow proper cam running in. Also does it tick when standing and when driving or only when driving? Try to isolate just where it comes in. like what gear, etc.

Yes i use cam lube everywhere, infact when i first took the block and cam back they said i may be using too much and just to put it on the lobes and dizzy gear otherwise i may have to much in the oil on startup and my rings may not seat properly, i still
