I have recently replaced a leaded 1985 4.1 for an unleaded 1986 engine. The distributor and wiring loom on the newer engine was different so I put the older distributor (which suits the loom wiring on my 85 model). Although I have it on Number 1 cylinder TDC It will not fire the unleaded motor. I have spark. I have fuel. I do get detonation in the carby that tends to indicate timing but moving the distributor a cog either way will not start the motor.
Does anyone know if I need to use the unleaded engine 's distributor or have any suggestions. I do not have a motor manual and the one at the local library must be the most popular book on the shelves it's always out. Perhaps this is not a good sign for owning an XF! But seriously it is a good car and I need to get it back on the road. Any help would be appreciated.

If its backfiring through the carby it's an almost dead certanty that you have the ignition timing 180degrees out.
Try swapping leads 1-6, 2-5 & 3-4 on the distributor cap & I bet it fires right up.

it won't matter what dissy you put in that car(it will even run on a points dissy, but electronic are so much better)so like someone said before,a common problem when putting in a dissy,is people putting them in but 180 degrees out.this means that you have

Yes I tried 180 degrees on the distrtibutor. Even though I was careful about this when I took it off. I used a screwdrver down number one and turned the motor until I get TDC in both positions. Both ways it backfires in the carby.
Thanks Jim

Yes. I tried this.
I have had the front pulley off. But this went back on with the key okay. But even so using a screw driver down the plug hole to find TDC on number one (by turning the motor until the screw driver is out as far as possible).

Take rocker cover off. Turn motor by hand until the intake valve on 1 opens and continue turning till it just closes. Check the rotor, is it pointing more or less to No 1 terminal? Also turn the ignition on, pull all the plugs out, sit No1 on a spot where
