G'day people. I am considering purchasing either a VR or VS commodore V8 auto ute. Just wandering what the differences are between the two. cheers,

They are pretty close in spec, but the VS V8 has 3kw extra power (and a fraction more torque) thanks to the engine running an airflow meter rather than the earlier MAP sensor arrangement, and a less restrictive cold air intake.

And also the VS series III has the VT roller cam engine and 179kW or 195kW with the Holden by design optioned engine.

Hi Guys.
The VT type roller cam engine(they also have Sequential Injection) is only fitted to very late series III, around Nov '98 onwards.
Most series III V8s have the 168 kw type series II engine.

I meant to add that not all series III's had the roller cam engine. I thought that the 179kW engine came a later than 1998 though. This would mean most of the series III's had the 179kW engine as they were only released mid 1998. I bought one new in Decem

VS series 1 ran the T5, VS series 2 went to the getrag.

Series IIIs are a handful aren't they.
The factory literature says:- Series III Utes released 19-May-98 Series III Statesman & Caprice released 2-June-98
The actual release of the 179kW VT V8 is a lot harder to pinpoint,

Dr Terry, My VS III S pack was the last VSIII manual (of any kind) sold new in Australia (22/12/00 bought). It was a July or August build if I remember correctly. I tried to get a V8 but they sold out a few months earlier. I was lucky to get the manual S

Hmmm....very interesting! Is it possible to tell a VT roller cam engine from the "outside" as opposed to a non-roller cam engine? Engine numbers perhaps? We have an ex-Victoria Police VT 5ltr SS in the yard at the moment. Statutory write off

I think all VT's are roller cam. The diecast bit(s) at the front of the engine that covers the throttle body are different for the 179kW roller cam engine, but I think these fit all models.
