I know a guy with a VT who has seen a VT - X instrument cluster on ebay . His has something like 180,000 K on the clock . The one on ebay is supposedly 100Km . Would I be wrong in assuming that the k's recorded would be stored in the memcal ?

As far as I know. they are stored in the Dash. I spilt coke on my VX calais dash and when i finally found a secondhand one, it didnt read the same. Mine had 60k on the clock. and the new secondhand one read 40k. So it must be stored in the dash.

Yep, it's held internally in the cluster in an EEPROM. The fords use a similar system too.
