I was always told that the best way to warm a motor up is to drive it.

All professional advice is that driving the car as soon as you fire it up is best for the motor.

The MAIN thing to remember is not to thrash it (if you must!!) until it has reached operating temperature as per the guage in the dash.

Normally start the ute then come back inside, finish my coffee and feed the dog before I drive it first thing in the morning.

Then of an evening coming home, will usually let it sit and idle for half a cigarette or so. If it won't come off the ch

*It causes a lot of wear in the bores and valves to let it warm up. Drive it as soon as possible to bring the temperature up. Saves fuel also. It is said that most of the wear in an engine is during the warming up, that's why taxis lat millions of ks.

Thats a sure way to kill it dude. If it sits there ideling then you eventualy glaze the bores (Shiny smooth) and after a couple of years of doing that, you will be smoking and using oil. Just get in and drive, but dont go hard and a long steep hill isnt r

If you had teeth like mine, you wouldn't bother blowing cash on batteries for a leccy toothbrush, trust me.

The old girl just likes to be warmed up a little before I drive her or she farts and coughs first thing in the morning.

Yeah, probly the best thing to do is start it, and as soon as the oil reaches the top of the motor (about 10 - 15 seconds)it is fine to drive. Never rev it real hard when its cold, particularly if it has a timing chain, as this will stretch like buggery.

Another argument for the first few k's to be easy whether warm or cold, is to let the oil circulate around the gearbox and diff a little bit. Thrashing those gears before the oil is warm enough to lubricate properly is going to cause excess wear in there

Most engine wear is caused at start up when the fuel washes the oil away from the bore. Taxi's run on gas and with gas you do not have the problem of fuel washing the oil away, that is why they get a million miles. It may not do an engine good to be left
