I'm upgrading the engine & transmission in my VN Calais to an HSV VR GTS 5.7 (stroked 304) & T56. As the engines are similar apart from the VR being a stroked engine, can I just change the memcals over and add the knock sensor? Both ECU's are Delco 808's, and internally look the same. Both cars have cruise control, and the only other difference besides engine capacity is the change from Turbo 700 to T56. I could use the VR engine loom with the gearbox wiring attached (knock sensor wiring already incorporated) if necessary.
Is this a simple changeover, or are there other things to consider?

If you use the VR ECU you will need the BCM to carry out the "anti theft" duties - that is, feed a serial data signal to the ECU to allow it to operate.
If the car is a low-series BCM, this is done at the BCM, but a high-series BCM doesn't

Awaiting the email Mick :-) Bummer.....we don't have the ignition key as the VR was a stat write off, and the car had a number of parts stolen from it during the 2 years it was in storage due to a legal issue with the original owner :-(

Hi Taz, just curious about something.
I was under the impressiont that VR/VS V8 computers were the same (talking ECU vs ECU and PCM vs PCM).
I didn't think that the VN 808's were the same. So how can your VN 808 be the same as your VR comp?

Hi Guys.
The VR won't have an 808 ECU, it will have an 082 (if manual) or a 424 (if auto). The memcals won't swap between thses 3 ECUs.
The easiest way to make any VR/VS/VT etc ECU work in a car without the factory immobiliser gear is to get a

Ummm...you've lost me Dre..... The VR ECU I have "LOOKS" the same as the VN one. That's not to say they are the same....I'm only going by visual inspection. Clearly the memcals are different. Ummm...does that make any sense???

Ummmm, bad choice of words.....Anti Theft system :-)
Also (again)...The chip in the VR is an HSV BKBK chip. Would be nice to retain that chip....or the configuration of that chip at least.
I'd probably prefer to use the VR system with VR BCM,

Lemme know if you need anything.
Cheers Dre
