I am looking for a V6 and auto trans to go into a hot rod roadster and have been checking out the damaged car auctions over the last two weeks. So far I have seen everything from VNs for $200 up to a VY with 66000ks on it for $2500.


What one would you guys recommend? Are there any models to avoid due to mechanical problems or whatever? Are the electrics easier on some models to set up in another car? Is there anything else I should look for?

From my limited knowledge of V6's (I used own a VG ute) the VN engine is a little raw, but it will be a lot cheaper. The series 2 version of the VN engine is much better than the ser 1 though. All VG's had the series 2.

Thanks Steve. I have been talkng to a few more people and they all say to forget the early ones. I have heard there are problems with the timing gears and balance shaft on ones with the rear water outlet but the pre ecotec models with the front outlet a

I have also heard not so good things about VN series 1 engines. Things like the coil packs going (coil packs X3 & DFI module will fit off any VP-VY engine though) Also something about timing chains but how hard could that be to update.

Hi Guys.


To keep it simple, the best engine/trans combo would be VP Series II. Best of the early V6s, & the auto trans is cable operated, they have the simplest & cheapest ECU & no immobiliser.

So Dr Terry you are saying that the VNseries 2 still had the pressurised cap on the overflow bottle?


If so I don't doubt that your right it's just that I thought that this was refered to as the series 1.5 engine.

None of these names are used by Holden.


The XX8 upgrade (Holden's name) was soon nicknamed the series II at the auction houses by dealers when these cars were near new 2nd hand.

I have a series 2 V6 motor in a lotus 7 lookalike clubman. The plugpack thing is actually the contacts on the big electrical connector. The symptom is the engine stops suddenly for no apparent reason and won't start. Some time later will start again for n
