Hey, I have a late 1987 Holden Astra SLX LD 1.8L fuel injected auto. For a while now the engine just dies whenever it is in gear (drive or reverse). I had someone from RACQ check it out and he diagnosed a dodgy idle speed sensor. However I've had this replaced and cleaned a few times and the problem still persists. My only option at the moment is to keep the air con on so that the engine will keep running. I've checked the ECM trouble code and it came up '12', which I believe means there's no fault it can find. The only thing my local mechanic has picked up on is that there isn't enough volts running through the engine, I think it's hanging around 4 or 5 volts, I'm not sure if this is contributes to my overall problem.
My thought is something to do with the fuel injection system and/or something controlling the fuel timers, although it all just doesn't add up.
I don't know if this is linked to my previous problem, but almost nothing on my dash works. The temp gauge hasn't worked for some time now, the fuel gauge works rarely, the speedo doesn't work all the time (dangerous, i know) and the only lights that work are the ECM light, the fuel light, the brake (!) light and the background light. I really don't have any idea what would be causing this, but I have been meaning to check into an Auto-Electrician.
Does any one have any idea on what might be the problem? Anything less than taking it in for an inspection on the fuel injection system (which would cost me around $90 for the inspection I've been told) would be awesome. Thanks in advance to all, I hope someone out there can help me.
Regards, Deanos.

It could wiring. VL's or similar era have also had electrical probs. Follow the wires back to their origin and measure the volts. Rgds, John

It may be worth weighing up what it will cost you to fix everything and what its worth to trade it in on another car , there is one of these cars near my parents house for sale for $350.00 ono in running cond. In Adelaide.which would tell me I wouldn`t be

It could be something as simple as a bad earth. They can get corroded over time. Check the negative battery lead where it bolts to the body and the engine.
It could also be that the alternator is dying. Check the volts across the battery terminals.

I have had a look at the leads running from the battery and they all look fine. At the point where they bolt onto the body and around it all looks fine. I don't have access to one of those battery meters to check the voltage, is there any other way to che

Ok, in regard to how many volts should be running through the engine, what should I be looking at? From memory, last time my mechanic looked at it he checked a little black box at the back of the engine bay with a few wires coming out of it, says somethin
