how can u tell if u are looking at a M21 or a M20 gearbox?

You can't tell unless you pull the sideplate off the gearbox and the part number on the main cluster is different between the two. Can't recall what the numbers are though! I'll try and find out tomorrow. 6cyl except XU-1 used M20, V8s used both, 6 cyl an

Put the box in first, then spin the input shaft while watching the output shaft. An M21 needs around 2.5 turns of the input shaft per one rotation of the output. An M20 needs a bit over 3 full turns of the input for one turn of the output (in first). <

That is of course unless you are looking at an M22 box, which was normally found in some 6cyl HQ-WB 1-tonners, normally if a 3.55 diff was specified and also optional on most 6cyl HQ and HJ's (and possibly later). M22 boxes sometimes show up behind V8's b
