Hi Everybody,
Got a few questions that hopefully someone out there can shed some light on for me.
Just got myself a fresh 308 built up about 2 months ago, and seem to be getting a lot of pinging issues when taking off from lights, or up large hills. The oil pressure on my GTS dash shows that when I pull up at the lights, the oil pressure just dies and drops down to the red. I have changed oil over to a thicker blend, being summer I thought that perhaps it was just way to thin. Currently have Penrite HPR 40 (25-70), and the oil pressure read out from my last dynotune was a seemingly healthy 28 @ Idle and 48 @ 2000rpm. The oil pressure seems to be fine when the engine is first driven, and there does not seem to be pinging present at all until the car gets hot on a long trip, or on very hot days after a few k's it just goes straight to the red at the lights and pinging is present.
Hope someone can help me with this, as I am a little reluctant to shell out for a new pump and high vol sump if that wont stop the pinging, etc. Also the engine is warm, upgraded cam, rods, manifold, etc.

Pinging is a fuel problem sometime affected by timing, not oil pressure.

Howdy,
Get yourself a $5 timing tape and stick it on the harmonic dampener pulley. Disconnect the vacuum advance and plug it, then hook up your timing light. Run the engine from say idle to 3000rpm (or as high as you dare to rev whilst stationary) a

Also try running on premium unleaded the higher octane seems to agree with older designed motors
|

Forget the pinging, I'll leave that up to others to help. I am more concerned about your oil pressure. One of the biggest mistakes people make with a Holden V8 is to rebuild them, but leave the old oil pump. These things wear just as the engine does. Did

yes premium is better to use cause the older leaded engines usually have higher compression.

Hi Sandman,
As the guys say you have multiple issues: oil pressure and pinging. Two different things.
You say the motor has been rebuilt, and it has a new cam rods etc. When the cam was done, were the heads upgraded as well ?Meaning did you UP

Thanks for your help.
I am a little worried about the oil pressure myself. The oil pump is a changeover unit, but there is obviously a problem with it somewhere down the line. Might have to garage the old girl until I can afford for it to be looked

The heads were ported to the throat area, but are standard heads, and flat top pistons have been put in to raise the compression to 9.7:1 I think. Dizzy was a new electronic type with Bosch coil and the vehicle is run on PULP.

Re OP, remove the old sender and replace it with a mechanical type from an auto shop. You neednt leave it on the car..but you need to read the OP at idle at least.
You may be right, that is the pump, and maybe it too low allright and making the new

Try an addiative such as flashlube with the PULP I use on my Black 308 with no pinging give ita try it will only cost $2 a tank Ken

my 202 did the same thing, it could be the wrong fuel like leaded or unledead thats wat mine did anyways. mite help.
