Just wondering about I.D from Adelaide built sandmans. AS i have 2 vans.one im using for spares and one is nice. 1 I.D. is HZ8W N 70 and the other is HZ8W M 70.Both have light switches in the doors and full hood linings. The M 70 is a factory 308 4sp and the spare N 70 is a 6cyl. I have also seen a Van with the same plate HZ8W M 70 with all the looks of a Sandman but it didn't have the full hood lining, Did the Belmont have light switches in the door frames like the Sandmans? Any help would be great

You may have seen already on this forum that I am currently researching Sandman IDing. In the HZ series the Sandman option was only available on the base model (Belmont) ie the 8WM model, and you could not get a 6cyl. The 8WN is only a Kingswood, and havi

Hi Guys.
Ditto to what Byron has said,
ID for Sandman is a difficult art.
Most of what Byron mentions, are the only IDs apart from the XX7/XU3 after the body number, on Brisbane cars only.
I,ve identified 2 HJ Kingswood Sandman ute

I've found 1 x HJ Kingswood Sandman ute (XX7 Brisbane), and 1 x suspected HJ Kingswood Sandman ute (XU3 Melbourne). I have a set of plates off a HX Kingswood van that I pulled off a 7 year old, 1 owner wreck in the early 80's. Unfortunately it's not a Bri

G'day Byron and Dr T,
What does this mean for the HJ base model van sitting beside my house that has the courtesy switches installed? Only had a short headlining, but it wasn't the original one. I had planned to use this to replace the rusted out bo

Does the HJ still have the ID plates? If so send me the data and I'll peruse them. Have a look at the top rear inside the HJ where a full length hoodlining would finish. If it has an extra piece of metal spot welded there that the HX doesn't (unless the H

I'll send you the id's for this one also, but I know that the interior of the HJ was completely redone. There maybe from memory some signs of spotwelds removed as the side mounting holes were bogged up.

Do you know from your research if a belmont van or ute could be optioned with bucket seats? I have been led to belive that they could not. If this is true then a belmont VIN on a van or ute with a seating capacity of 2 may also be an indication of a Sandm

Hi Chris.
Yes, you could option bucket seats in any model ute or van.
So, unfortunately the bucket seat thing is not a good Sandman identifier.
The GVM & tyre placards are the ones to watch.
Another good one if your trying to p

Hey Dr T,
I have a brochure for the HX which states a Standard 3300cc engine with 4 speed manual was available.
Always thought it was the HZ that was only availble in V8 trim.

I belive that belmont vans have no door arm rests as Sandmans do? And the trim has horizontal lines and belmonts have vertical?

Hi Byron.
Yes, you are correct, my mistake, HZ V8 only & HX do not have 173/2850.
Somebody the door trim & armrest thing. To my knowledge all Sandmans are trimmed the same as Kingswoods. All non-Sandman Belmonts have vertical door trim

HZ Sandmans have 2 courtesy lights under the dash to light up your feet, And there should be a brown tacho wire in the three plug harness in the engin bay next to the main engin harness plug.

AllHZs have the brown tacho wire, as this could be fitted as an option it was cheaper to fit to all harnesses.
