Hi all,

Got a 308 red pre-pollution V8 in my Torana. This is a leaded motor and the standard dizzy has the factory advance curve for leaded petrol (96 octane or so). Just wondering if anybody else has a leaded V8 and if you have noticed if the current 98 octane unleaded petrol (optimax, synergy 8000, BP Ultimate etc) will run in these old motors with no extra pinging than the original leaded fuel?

The reason I ask is that I have just finished building my distributor graphing machine and I would like to replace my distributor with a electronic HEI dizzy then re-adjust this distributor (with it's slow pollution advance curve) to the correct factory advance curve for my non-pollution V8. so. I guess I'm pretty much asking if the original factory leaded fuel curve will still work without pinging with the current 98 octane fuels?

Sorry to go on a bit.

Cheers,

Paul E

Hi ,A lot of guys in our club use premium 98 in their old cars with pre pollution without additives and are happy the way they run , I use it in my 66 pontiac with 350 chev and it runs fine.

I agree with "Cloudy". I run 2x 253's pre-poll (no egr valve), and all I use is PULP. No additives. I run bog standard cam, and timings. Of course running a Q doesnt have the pickup of a Torrie.

I believe a low octane rating can be a cause of pinging, another cause is misfiring where instead of a controlled burn from the spark plug outwards the fuel gases explode upon spark.

since the octane rating is higher you should have no troubles.
