I have a 1985 VK Commodore Black 304 V8 (V7X). I have had the Inlet manifold gasket replaced just before xmas. I started to get overheating problems about two weeks later with the liquid being siphoned off from the radiator through the recirclation system.


No water appear to be leaking and there is none in the sump. I have ocassionaly had the No 4 Cylinder miss fire.


I had a brand new radiator and thermostat put in yesterday and the can ran fine all day One day the car is at normal operating temprature then the next day there is a rapid rise from the standard 71c up to 120c the top radiator hose is solid with preasure and the water then gets siphoned off.


Natrad who did the radiator job tell me it is not a radiator or cooling problem, but may be a head problem possibly a blown head gasket or cracked head.


Could it be Blown? . The vacume gauge still reads 18 to 20 hg and the car still has good performance.


WhenI took the oil cap off today there was a bit of white frothy oil on it. is this the tell tail blown Head gasket.


Also what would be the cheaper option? Get the heads done and new gaskets (Been quoted about 1800 to 2k from Repco) or a complete Replacment engine from HMGEM apart from that the car is pristeen.

sounds like a head gasket , cast iron heads generally dont crack under normal use.

Just some tips if you want to check for a blown head gasket Ken. Water in the oil, oil in the water, bubbles in the radiator while running, really low crank pressure on adjacent cylinders. These are the most common. So after checking the simple stuff do a

Hi Ken.


It could be many things, but if you think it maybe a leaking head gasket, the cheapest way is to do a chemical test at the radiator cap outlet.


It will tell you definitely if there is any presence of CO vapours in the cooling system.

an easier thing to do is take the plugs out and crank it over, watch for water!
