hey all,

It looks like my banjo diff is on the way out and I'm thinking an upgrade.

I don't want the bulkiness of a 9 inch and have heard about the borg warners and commodore diffs - are they the same from all models?

What diff do you guys recommend from what model and what experiences have you had with them.

I am also considering a disc brake rear end and would like to know if I could economically do it in stages

That is once I get a diff in with drums is it just a bolt on affair to get discs later or is there cut and shut welding involved.

What discs should I look out for Torana front or Commodore rear?

I still want to keep the same stud pattern.

I read your last post and it seems your wheel bearing is at fault here not the diff. Unless the diff is making strange noises or clunks badly I'd say it's still OK. I have a set of LX axles with near new bearings already fitted, happy to post these too.

I had a bearing replaced not so long ago, the car stayed at the mechanics overnight and they rang a diff specialist for advice, the g'box growls when in neutral at 90km/hr. They suspect a tooth or something in the diff. I can take it to the specialist for

Yep that makes sense especially if the centre is noisy.

Cheers

I converted my hatchback years ago to a 10 bolt Salisbury, using A9X axles and HZ rear discs and calipers, modified HT brake booster, HZ front stubs/discs and a combination of WB and UC Torana front calipers. All of this is easy to get EXCEPT for the A9X

Byron, What does using a combination of UC and WB calipers achieve rather than using normal HQ-HZ?? As I have HQ stubs, disc and caliper on my HK does your set-up work better?

You need to do it to clear the tie rod end on an LH, LX or UC. Basically all you have to do is use the UC PBR caliper and mounting bolts, and just replace the cast iron pad carrier (with TORANA on it) with the WB one with HOLDEN on it. The WB carrier is b

The VN short axle is about 25mm longer than the A9X one, which makes it about the same as a VB-VK 10-bolt axle. You may have to try a Skyline or Pintara diff. These might be close to the right length.
