Check the breather lines from the filler to the tank.

Peter is correct, but a visual check will not reveal any signs of leaking fuel.

On inspection, all the fuel would have evaporated and will leave no tell tales signs.

You need to physically lift the breather lines up and rotate them to check underne

Make sure that no accessories have been screwed into the front section of the tray e.g. tie down brackets, tool boxes. This has been a surprisingly common cause for a fuel smell at the holden dealer where I work. The screws go straight into the fuel tank!

I had fuel smells in all my utes, except the current one, and could never find the source. My current ute has new vapour hoses though, so it could be perished vapour hoses. If you do change them, then go for fuel spec hose, rather than just rubber hosing.

all commodores i have owned or worked on have had perished return lines.
easiest way to spot them is start the car and then look at the hoses near the filler. the leaky ones will be spilling juice out every where.
