Hey, Just recently i have had alot of clunking coming from around the gearbox. It used to only happen when i was on a hill, parked and not carefull when shifting. Its tri, auto 253......
but lately getting heaps of clunking, mainly when the start of acceleration, or when accelerating after taking the foot off to slow down a bit???
whats the go???

Aiden, I`d say it may be your diff, when they get all loose they start clunking when taking up the backlash in either direction, any good diff shop can shim it up to correct it unless its gone too far or damaged something.

I would also check all the gearbox mounts (and engine mounts aswell). I have a VQ 304 with a T700R4 which had a rotten clunking noise. Seemed like one day I'd be driving along and I'd look in the rear vision mirror and see some part of my beloved car left

More likely a universal joint take the tail shaft off and dismantle to check you cannot successfully check it on the car as the needles can collapse over and jam up and seem to be all right. Unis are cheap, replace them anyway.

Have the Uni Joint at the diff end checked, as this is a classic area for clunking. You would be better to get the yolk, uni joint and the diff bearing replaced as they go one after the other Ken
