hi all,
my vn ss has finally got to 280 000 kms still smokes up hard but i want to get a 2nd hand dash with less k's on it maybe wind back the km's even. wot im getn at is ive never done either, is it hard, and how do i do it? when buying 2nd hand dash how do i tell if it still works?

For the effort that is required for the "increae" in value is just not worth it. (VNs are known to go for over 400000kms, mine is just run in on 330000kms)
I take it that you intend to falsly represent the vehicle with the intention of getting more mon

Exactly Warren, plus how many older cars still have the original engine, gearbox, diff etc. It may say 400,000 on the dash but be on the 3rd engine and changed gearbox from auto to manual so even if it's the original speedo it only tells how far the body

Agree. However how many of you have changed a dash in a HK-WB or Torana before, especially when fitting a GTS or SLR dash? Did you tell the subsequent owner that the kM were not original?? As Warren says, does it really matter once the vehicle is over 5 y |

When you register or re-register a car (in NSW) the odometer reading is written down.
The reason the odometer is written down is NOT so the RTA can see how many kilometres you do per year.
The RTA does it to see if your has mystically driven in rev

yes they do write it down...BUT...try to get the information from them...i am a licensed motor dealer and i purchased a vehicle for myself 7 years ago,within 3 months i had suspicions of it not doing the stated k,s..btw,i also purchased this from a licens |

its on its last legs,for some reason the commodores don't like hi km.i have seen many fords with very hi kms and they seem to keep on going?sell it now while it still runs on 7 and get a vl at least the jap motors in them were reliable.

280,000 is about 18,600klm`s a year for 15 years which is under the average given of around 20,000klm`s a year, so what your problem, the car has done under average kays for its age !

I've done it a couple of times when fitting replacement speedos I didn't want the speedo showing 400,000 when I've only done 280,000.
Also I keep detailed log books so its easier to keep the details consecutive.
But it's almost impossible to line the nu

dont risk a fine by being stupid.
and as for VL engines, i haven't met an owner yet that reckons they are any more bulletproof than the VN engines.
notorious for head gaskets.
the VN V8's are very reliable. as is any engine ...... if pro

Whats the deal if you buy a NOS speedo from a dealer ? I purchased an HQ one many years ago, there was no issue of winding it forward, they just sold it to me.
Just go and buy a new one, they cant blame you with winding it back then.

I think everyone here has said what needs to be said, but you did ask a question about how to tell if a second hand dash is working.
The only way (unless you have a fancy test bench wired up) is to plug it in to the car and give it a go.

on the topic of winding the speedo back, my tonner is undergoing a full resto and all besides the cab and chassis is new, I have wound the kays back as its starting a new life. would it be acceptable to have the original Kays from the speedo (not its orig

on a 6 digit odemeter what does it matter , If you do a full resto you tell them eg: "It was restored at 280,000" and keep log after resto.
