I have bought a cheap VH wagon , running a 253 HQ motor, the motor runs slightly rough and under load blows white /grey smoke which I would think was water in the system? theres no milky sludge under the breather cap and the dipstick oil looks normal.
Could it be the inlet manifold badly corroded ?
any thoughts...

if its coming out the exhaust it must be getting into the combustion chamber rather than the sump. if a valley cover leaks into the valley it will milk up the oil but wont make it out the exhaust. i would be doing a compression test and checking the plugs

Does the smoke disappear quickly or hang around? If it disappears quickly it is most likely steam which means a head gasket etc, if it hangs around it is probably oil means rings or valves.
Also try putting a rag folded several times over the exhaust for

253's from experience ( I have 2 of em) blow white smoke/steam only when cold or warming up. And it can be quiet a deal of it.

However when the engine is warm ! There should be none.

Hi Guys.

If it blows smoke under load it's most probably rings. The colour of the smoke is not a good indicator these days.

If you are concerned about water/head gasket issues, get a chemical test, very quick & cheap.

Are you actually using much
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0
