My AU Fairlane handbrake went out of adjust ment over a six month period. I kept it in adjustment by turning the nut at the handbrake handle end of the cable until I ran out of adjustment thread. The wheel and of the cable attaches to a lever which activates the brake. I found the travel on the Right hand lever was much greater than that of the left hand wheel. i took the car to my local Ford Dealer and explaind the problem. They advised there was a self adjuster which had gone out of adjustment. I asked them to fix it. They charged me $180 and the hand brake now worked. Six months later it has gone out of adjustment again.

Does anyone know what is causing this and what I need to do to get it fixed properly. OR is it something I can do myself. the Ford people told me they had to remove the axles to adjust the handbrake... Is this true

Regards,
Douglas

removing the axels sounds a bit far fetched but im not a mechanic so who knows, if u havent already, have a look in a workshop manual before u do anything else.

AU's are notourious for handbrake adjustment problems. Mine has a sticky cable and self adjuster on the right side which gives me the same problem about every 6 mths too. It's not the case that they need to remove the axles , just the wheels, and brake di
