Does any one know if a 9 inch diff with disc brakes out of an XA XB(Ford) etc foul the rear leaf springs on a HX van?? Like a disc brake 10 bolt salisbury??

Or are these diffs drum brakes from factory, with a conversion to disc brakes? I have seen a few for sale?? with some drum others disc??

I am planning more stopping power for my Van as i have upgraded motor to 383 chev??

Hi Craig.

Yes they have the same problems, because they use the same PBR caliper.

I should make this a bit clearer, when Ford first brought out the rear disc set-up, they used a longer horizontal lever, that had poor mechanical advantage & also some

Dr Terry. I've never really taken much notice of Fords. How did they clear the leaf springs on the XB, XC, XD and XE/XF wagons if they used the same caliper as the LX, UC, HZ and WB? Was the caliper just located in a different spot?

Well said Byron!
That is the question i was trying to ask! Re:the hand brake mechanism!
I know it's a fairly common modification for big hp holdens, it would be real interesting on how you would do a disc brake conversion to one of these 9 inch diffs. U

I have a nine inch diff in a Holden ute and used XF Falcon rear discs and calipers. The car was lowered 40mm using lowering blocks and this solves the hand brake lever/leaf spring clearance issue.

Hi Guys.

As I said in my post above, the same problem still exists, because the caliper is the same.

The only difference is that the caliper is mounted behind the axle (not forward) & the outer cable is anchored on a small bracket on the axle tubing

And now for a real nightmare solution.

The HQ Ute beastie I picked up is running a 400 SB Chev, narrowed ford 9", the HQ leaf springs (remounted to the narrowed chassis to clear the tubbed rear), and .. wait for it .. Mazda RX 7 Series 1 disks.

RX7 series 1 and 2 are definitely not the same as HQ - they are not even 5 stud if I remember my old series 2 correctly.

Not the same as holden, the same as Ford (being the same company, all but).

This was just the story I got, didn't bother checking it out. All I know is that: a) the parts are a nightmare, b) being a ute they don't have to do terribly much anyway so

Probably series III RX7, as these were different to series I and II. I don't think Ford owned Mazda in the late 70's/early 80's.
