V8'S and "P" Plates (a good choice ?)

I, writing this after reading Rowans post "253,308 HP". Mainly because mi son wants me to keep the HQ 253 Panel van for when he get's his licence next year. BUT after 22 years I can see a pattern (pretty close to home). When mi missus had her Ps we had an XY 302 auto. One day (raining) she freaked to miss an ending lane, and instead of hitting the Brake, she floored the accelerator. No harm, just a 180 facing oncoming traffic, (a good party story). 2 years ago my daughter (on P's for a year) borrowed mi 5L VN Berlina, went through a roundabout(an idiot cut her off on the inside exit) she freaked, did the same thing - floored the throttle, spun car sideways, up the gutter through a 7inch tree. No one hurt except mi pride and joy was written off (fire brigade had to chainsaw tree away). I'v seen this happen even teaching kids to ride mi Z50 Honda mini bike - they panic and grab whatever they can (usually throttle). Last of all I think "AUTOS BEHIND V8s OR ANY CAR ARE MORE DEADLY" to inexperienced drivers. When they accidentally floor them, they Kick-Down Rev like Hell and TAKE OFF. At least a manual in top gear dosn't do much when u Floor it accidentally. ALL P-PLATES (not L's) SHOULD BE MADE TO LEARN MANUAL, IF THEY WANT TO DRIVE ANYTHING OVER 1000cc, but thats just what I beleive.

The general consensus is that young drivers should not drive a V8. My sons both have V8s and although my eldest has had 2 minor accidents they were not because of the size of the engine. He drives my old HG Prem 308 which is the car I learnt to drive

Basiclly its all about knowing your car and capabilities. I've owned V8's all my life and a 500cc road trail. And more often than not its been the extra power thats given me the confidence to manover and use the vehicals to drive in a safe responsable man

i definatly agree that all P platers should learn in a manual, because you have more control over the car, but also you never know when your gonna be in the situation when its a emergeny and u have to drive ur mates manual car to the hospital for whatever

I learnt to drive in a FC holden (dads work car) with grey motor and manual back in 1982 but went for my test in mums auto datsun so I could drive both from 16 ,I think it all depends on the maturity of the driver to how safe they may drive not the size o

Im a soon to be P - Plater. I have a Hq Tonner with a 5spd v8 (253) in it. I think it is ridiculous that they are trying to place bans on all v8's when they will allow people to drive around in corollas that will more than likely give my old tonner a run

simple................ V8's dont kill people, inexperience kills people. dont let your inexperienced child behind the wheel of any fast car until they know how to drive it. my mum made me get a racing licence(family of rev heads) before i bought my fir

This is the same issue as the motorbike limit on P plates. They limited P platers to 250CC and man did they make some 250 screamers that were down right deadly. It is all down to power to weight ratio just as Matt said there are a lot of rice burners arou |
Cheers, Pete. Old Holdens never die, they just go faster. |

Sounds like the old well worn cliche " guns kill people dont", doesnt it. As many have said it depends on the person in charge, not the inanimate object.
