Is it just here in Northern Tasmania, or is it an Aust wide problem?
I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find anyone in any automotive trade here in Northern Tasmania, who does a decent job and takes care of the owners vehicle.
In the last year....
I've had a VN Calais rebuilt from virtually the ground up. Things left out by the "builder"
Lower rear bar not painted.
Bolts for air cond condenser left out.
Rear wing painted by not buffed back.
Front air deflectors left out.
Horns not connected.
Engine bay was sprayed, but promised touchup where brake fluid dripped onto the rails, was not done before engine was installed.

Another business installed short travel front struts and did the wheel alignment. When I got the car back, the paint around one of the strut towers had been gouged out for 2/3 of the circumference. The business did however pay to have the strut repainted.

Power steering problem.....
Took the car to another business to get a quote on repair.
The mechanic took a look under the bonnet, and grabbed hold of the wiring loom that runs behind the power steering pump...and yanked it up breaking a connector that joins a lead to the temp sensor.

Ordered a new power steering pump....got it home (I'll install it myself thanks very much). Took the pump out of the box....and half the paint fell off it!
Now it will be a week before I can drive the car again because I have to strip the paint off the pump and respray it myself!!
This vehicle is not your average VN, but it's still impossible to get a quality job done from most places.

I'm in the wrecking business, but at least I DISMANTLE vehicles rather than just wreck things like a lot of places seem to do.

Okay...I've had my gripe. Where do I sign up for Grumpy Old Men?

Oh boy, it must be Australia wide!

I get a lot of "mates of mates" recommended to me to fix niggling probs people give up on, and I've seen some fantastic examples of not getting a proper job done. It's usually worse on electrical related issues, but

never knew that, don't wanna cause trouble :/ just get irritated at the thought of third rate fools taking the hard earned $$$ of unsuspecting victims. seems to happen a lot, yet we as car enthusiasts, even with our expanded knowledge of vehicles, seem to

It,s hard to find good trades persons because once they are found out, they become busier and then are forced to hire in extra help to cope with demand.
If a good trades person dose'nt hire in people as equally competant as himself, his business suffers.

Yeah it is Oz Wide. I had a brand new AC compressor plus a retro fit to 134A fitted to my VK ($1,800) and one day I noticied a fine spray of oil on my chrome rocker covers and put a spanner on the blot to tigten the offending hose and the the pipe went of

If the bolt is the incorrect length and/or thread it is not relevant whether the warranty has run out or not. It is faulty workmanship and you should go to the Trade Protection people in your state to recover the costs. Also don't forget to consult a lawy

NZ not much better. Just had to have whole bunch of rust taken out of inner sills of HQ ute for WOF. Couple of PBs wouldn't touch it, some wanted several grand, but a couple were under a grand. Went back to the one who was local, and the guy who did t

That's good advice from johnperth. There is always an avenue to have faulty workmanship corrected even if the 'warranty' is expired.
Workshops/Tradespeople who are responsible for this type of dodgy work should always be reported to the authorities. Ma

Just a thought guys, would it be worthwhile putting together a list on Fast Lane of recommended repairers/restorers? We could probably set it up so there is some sort of screening process, so it doesnt just turn into a list of advertisers.

But that way

Be careful of litigation, and irate customers in the wrong venting their frustrations online. Any tradesperson is only as good as his worst job, and one mistake by a hungover employeee should not mean that a quality workshop is badmouthed on the in
