Hi all, scored a small hole in my timing cover the other day through the water jacket. I assume a small section has just corroded through. The car is a hx, with a fairly mixed up 308. It has vl commodore heads and a lot of commodore running gear. Also know it has a commodore water pump. What is involved in replacing a timing cover, is this a job that can be done with the engine in the car. A few guides say to take it out? thought i might just be able to hang the sump down and do it with the eng in? Any help appreciated. thanks. Tom

Im not totally sure in a hx but in the commodores you dont need to move the engine to change the timing cover, i cant see why you would in a hx. Ive just dont it in my vc, basically i took the radiator off, undid the fan and fan/power steering belts.

oh and also you will need to take the fuel pump off, and any radiator/heater hoses attatched to the timing cover of course. I havnt needed to touch the sump as long as your careful not to brake the front seal when putting the cover back on, also the two

Yes that is how you do it. You may be able to do it without removing the sump at all. You will just need heaps of blue silastic to make a proper seal as you won't be able to get the rubber to go back in properly. |
