Hi
I dont know a lot bout cars and would love your help. I have a Holden Astra 1988 1.8 Automatic. It has leaked some redish fluid, and then when I turned the steering wheel to put in garage it has started making a awful noise which I thought was the power steering, but then remembered the lady I got it from said there wasn't any? so I thought it must be tramission fluid, only thing is I dont know if it is. As I am not sure where you fill it up to!!! So would I fill up with transmission fluid in the silver cylinder at the back left of the engine which is empty! Why I am so confused is because I have no manual, and have been looking on the net and by what I have read is this cylinder is for power steering fluid as it has a small dipstick on lid! If I haven't totally confused you, can anyone help!

Certainly, the symptoms sound like a leaky power steering setup.
As Jim said, fill it to the full mark (there may be 2 marks, one for hot and one for cold...use the appropriate one) with auto transmission/power steering fluid (same stuff).
It seems

Kerry, It wouldn't hurt to find out why the system is loosing fluid. Sounds like either a hose, pump or box might be leaking. Make sure you get the correct fluid as there are a couple of different types depending on make of vehicle. Check with whoever

Actually, I'd just like to complement the Ford guys on here. Kerry has very obviously posted a Holden question on the Ford side of the site and not one smartarse comment...well done guys! I, for one, am impressed!
Cheers...Dave
