Hi there,

I'm a newbie to this stuff, so please forgive my vagueness. I drive a '91 vq statesman and it has recently started to stop running while I am driving it. Everything is fine, until all of a sudden the car stops - it takes me a couple of goes to get it running then the idle is jumpy for a minute (running between 1100 and the normal 750).
I plan to take it to a mechanic but being female, it helps if I have an idea of what to tell them. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? Happy to give more info if you need it:)

Take it to a Holden dealer or a mechanic with a VN/VQ diagnostic tool. They will be able to tell pretty quickly what is broken.

Sounds like a fuel pump on its way out, but as Byron says, your best bet is to get it diagnosed by a Holden Dealer.
As an initial check.....Can you hear a faint hum when you turn the ignition key on (before you actually start the car)?

I had it checked out and the diag tool found nothing wrong with the car - the service team couldn't even get the problem to re-appear for them - so that's a no go...
I will check out the fuel pump situation next, thanks for the tip Taz2 :) Em

On this same topic... can anyone tell me if a VQ V8 statesman has a crank-angle sensor? I have been told by a 'tech' that teh V8s don't have one. Em

Hi Guys.

The VN -VS Holden V8s do have a crank sensor. It's a Hall Effect unit & is mounted in the distributor.

You can no longer buy the sensor itself as a part from Holden, But I sell a complete exchange reco dissy for $250-00 with 12 months warra
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Hmmmm, this leads to a new query.
If the V8s have the crank angle sensor in the distributor (I didn't know that!), then why does HSV include a knock sensor on their V8s?
I suppose I'm assuming the 2 sensors do similar/same things.....???

No, they are 2 totally different sensors.

The crank sensor, does basically what the points used to do. They determine the base point for engine timing. The main difference between an old points & distributor type set-up is the old fashion d

I guess this is one reason why the V6's go so well.
No distrib, crank angle sensor, knock sensor and coil packs!

JUst a quick point. I own a 1992 VQ V6 Statesman and had the same problem. Engine cutting out had to wait 5 or ten minutes before it would start. I dis everything, changed plugs, leads, air and fuel filters etc, in the end it was the crank angle senso

also the alarm switch in the glovebox can be faulty and no test will find that,can cause engin to cutout and run rough
