Hi all, have a question about how best to paint an engine bay. Specifically, how to do it the hard way whilst there is still an engine in there.

The bay is in a 1970 HG premier, and it has 30 years of grime and slight rust spotting.

Do I really have to sand the whole thing back by hand? Is there some chemical prep I can use instead (eg acetone)? Or some special kind of high-bond paint I can use?

Can normal acrylic paints be used here, or do I need to use heat proof enamels due to the temperature?

Lastly, am I legally allowed to temporarily remove the vin/engine # plates to paint properly (obviously putting them back afterwards), or do I have to paint around them?

sandblasting works well, but will work even better with the motor out -

Try using household oven cleaner. Just get the el-cheapo homebrand type and spray it on.
I have found it great for removing engine bay grime. The longer you leave it, the harder it works.

Your engine bay isn't going to look much better if you spray it with the engine in....it will be obvious, and look tacky.
If you are going to the trouble of spraying it, do it properly and you will be thoroughly pleased with the result.

GTS... are there any side effects on using oven cleaner? Its very caustic and can damage an oven if not cleaned properly, does it affect plastic, wireing or anything like that? Do you hose or high pressure wash? and have you tried it any were else, such a

Just about any respectable paint you select will handle the typical under bonnet temp.
I restore hand tools and use common QD enamel and then bake it in swmbo's oven at 100 -120 C and it comes up quite well with no sign of discolouration and it goes off
