This post is a note to all other Tri owners out there. There is a post earlier on this week that I am trying to resolve. But here is some info I had to de-cypher from the Stato-HQ-LJ-CH trimatic manual I had. Its not real clear in the book.

When is a Tri - not a Tri ? There are at least 8 diff types. They suit all sorts of engine and differential configs for the above cars/trucks.

Only 2 (the HO & HP) of the 8 types are for the 253/308, and have larger diameter journals and stems/spools. Therefore take more volume to make em work. Therefore act slower (my guess).

There are also 3 modulators types (the vacuum can) that spread across these 8 different Tri units. Still not sure what they do either.

The Tri's usually have a plate and the LH side. It will say HL, HS, HZ, HY, HN, HT, HO or HP. And may have a category number A, B or C.

I must be real lucky as my plate is blank. I suspect I do not have a HO or HP Tri as I am shifting to 3rd way to early. Wait and watch. Off to the auto shop for some advice.

Cheers John

Yes, 76 different Tri-Matics, dependant on engine type, LH or RH shift, cable or electric detent, series 1, 2, or 3 & valve body ty

so the name "Trimatic" is just a term meaning 'three speed automatic' and nothing more!!
To truely know what box one is talking about you need to say a 'HY-A series 2 trimatic'!!!!
Great....

Hi Guys.

All Tri-Matics are still GM Tri-Matics & 'most' parts are interchangeable. Many differences are just minor valve body changes, which would make the 'box still interchangeable.

The main differences are whether they are Series 1, 2 or 3, diff

The main differences are whether they are Series 1, 2 or 3, different bellhousings, to suit different block bolt patterns & LH or RH side shifter.

Hi Guys.

Yes, the differences between the 6 Tri-Matic & the V8 one, is the front shafts, the extra cltches in the clutch pack & changes to the valve body for pressures & shifting etc. AFAIK the one & only band is the same across the board.
