No idea really, but as a 350 is legally allowed in an HQ without having to be engineered, that would be my pick.
I've seen a few 350's made into 400's and they are pretty amazing engines, with unbelieveable performance.

As far a GM manufactured equipment is concerned, the 350 blocks were the high performance stuff as the 400 was used mainly in trucks and BIG Brady bunch style station wagons and only ever came as a cast crank low hp engine. There are always stories gettin

Don't bother with a 400 crank. Talk to Eagle or SSS in Sydney, and you can buy a new nodular iron 3.75 inch stroke crank with the journals all at STD size for a 350, for around $350 or less. It will cost you well over $200 to resize a 400 crank. The same

400 heads are the same as 350, just have the steam holes drilled. The smoke is probably the valve guides. I had a 350 in a HJ ute which I put LPG on after buying it. It was almost perfect in bore and crank (hone and linish only) when pulled apart a few we

The best factory heads are the 292 slant plug 'turbo' heads. These are serious bolt on HP, just like VN heads on an early block. These are very hard to find nowadays (I'm actually looking for one to replace a failed LPG insert job). They are characterised
