I think you're right!!
I have a efi 308 running a turbo 700 with a stage 2 shift kit, and a 3.9:1 LSD diff ratio.
Personally I'm pretty happy with it....great take off and criuses nicely in 4th or whatever the equivalent is in autos.

I have a 3.08 diff in a 308 ute with M21 and find it a bitch to get moving but pretty good on the highway. 3.36 is where I'm headed.

You are much better of leaving the 3.08 and rebuilding the M21 as an M20 or M22. That way you get a 1st gear (when using an M22) of the equivalent to an M21 with a 4.53 diff. An M20 with a 3.08 is the equivalent of an M21 with a 3.78 diff. With either you

The ute came with a 3.36 and the original owner put in the 3.08 diff as he was doing a lot of highway miles. I'm going back to the 3.36 for originality as the 308 motor and M21 gearbox were original.
