Hi all
I have a HQ prem 6cyl with low miles on the clock. I have spent a fair bit of time and $ getting the front end, brakes and steering in good nic. I am after people's opinion on a good quality tyre that can improve the ride and/or handling. It is not modified at all (save for a beefed up sway bar) and has standard rims. Not really after a hugely wide tyre (I drive it around Melbourne and it becomes a pain to park). Willing to spend a bit of cash but not go silly.
What brand/size do people recommend?

185 is the factory fitment for standard rims 195x65 is a good size for stock HQ rims any wider and your steering will be heavier to park, bridgestone or dunlop , goodyear all good brands.

I used to run Good Year Eagle GA's on my Torana, 205x65, on 13" rims, until they stopped making them in 13". Very good tyre, fairly well lasting, excellent in the wet. Apparently there isn't enough demand for wide 13" tyres, so very few manufacturers ma

Matt,
Original HQ tyres were 6.00 or 5.00 J or JJ rims x 14". There was a tyre placard in the glovebox ! Most were tall skinny tyres as in 195/70HR14, or 185/75SR14. Not an easy tyre to get these days. I have the same prob as you. If you can find a 195

Hi Matt,
Like these other guys said, stick with a tyre size that is fairly close to stock. It will be easier on the steering and any reputable tyre dealer should be able to recommend a suitable tyre.

stock HQ rims are about 5 inch only GTS rims were 6 inch

According to my tyre placard there were 3 types: 5.00JJ 6.00JJ and 6.00JK. With 16 different tyre profiles to suit eg 6.95SR14 thru to the ER70H14 and the 195SR14.
If you add GTS rims to the mix, then you also have 6.00JK and 6.00JJ (GTS rim).

Matt,
I run Goodyear eagle GA Plus 215x65x14s. They are nice and quiet on the road, don't seem to wear much and are good in the wet. I do have pwr steering though, so don't notice how heavy they are. not sure if they still make this specific tread p

Can anyone enlighten me as to what the JJ and JK mean.
When I built my HJ GTS many years ago I fitted a glovebox lid from another vehicle and it had a 7 inch rim listed on the tyre placard which was on it. I believe it was from a 1 tonner but I may be

Hi MM,
If you have a spare rim (any modern one) you will see just inside the hub area a raised lump going all the way around the rim. One on the inner edge and one on the outer edge. The idea is that IF you get a blowout or flat, these lumps hold the t

That is great info and I had a feeling it was something to do with the safety bead but didn't really know. I also didn't know there was a difference in early and late GTS rims.
I have a stack of GTS rims in the shed (at least 15 of the bug

Hi Guys.
Trubluhq is spot-on about the JK/JJ rims.
The 7" rims mentioned on the tyre placards in HJ-HZ are the Polycast (Honeycomb) wheels. AKAIK these are the only factory 7" rims for HQ-HZ series Holdens.

I had a set on a toyota years ago which were 14`s, good tyres but sqealed a bit on roundabouts at normal speed otherwise ok.

Here is another point or two on rims. In summary.
The JK has one bead. The JJ has two beads. The GTS-JJ has 3 welds inside the rim, the GTS-JK has NO welds inside the rim. So u dont need to strip the tyre to find out ! Just jack it up and have a look.
