I'm on the other side of the world (Texas), but I think some of you might be able to help me. So here goes.

I'm in the process of deciding what new car to buy. I need a hatchback for my daily commute. I've looked at several cars, and one that really stood out from the crowd is the Suzuki Reno. For a small car, it rides very big and smooth, and has a very upscale interior (with leather seats available and everything).

It is the hatchback version of a car called the Suzuki Forenza in the States. I actually have never seen a Reno hatchback on the road, but the Forenza sedan and wagon are getting somewhat popular. In Canada, this line is known as Chevy Optra, and in Australia as the Daewoo Lacetti. The cars are built in Korea at the GM-Daewoo plant and have a Holden-designed 2.0 litre engine.

I've discussed the merits of this car with the North American crowd, but the cars are not very popular in the United States. I think much of the problem has to do with the recent turmoil arising from Daewoo's bankruptcy and buyout by GM. I was wondering if anyone in Oz has experience with the Daewoo Lacetti. Are these cars any good? Or is buying a GM-Daewoo asking for trouble?

I don't know much about the Lacetti only that Daewoo pulled out of Australia at the start of this year but will be coming back very soon badged as Holdens. The Lacetti will be first but named the Holden Viva.

Having said that though my parents bought

So basically the guy on an American forum that said he was from Australia just had a thing against Daewoos kind of like some people don't like Fords or Hyundais or whatever I guess.

Like I said, the Reno is underpowered and doesn't get the best mileage

Unfortunately, the Corolla does not come in a hatchback version in the U.S. and I need a hatchback. Neither does the Honda Civic (except for a sport model with manual trans only, and my wife requested an automatic). Toyota sells a wagon based on the Cor

And now you have a chance to see this mythical Holden-engined Daewoo for yourselves: Behold the Viva, coming to Holden dealer near you!

Hello
Saw your thread and sorry may be a bit late....

Yes, I also read locally hear in Oz some time a go that Holden were going to source the new Barina through GM-Daewoo.

My wife and I both had Daewoo's prior to our present cars. To be honest, we

Thanks for the insight. As it turns out, I haven't bought a car yet. Sold my old one (a Ford Aspire, aka Kia Avella, aka Kia Pride, aka Mazda 121) and am driving my son's Escort (he's away at university at present).

I'm leaning way from the Daewoo pr

Isn't that all any car is, really? Transport? I want something fairly comfortable, but I don't need anything too fancy. I was really impressed by the Suzuki Reno (Holden Viva); it had a Euro feel that many small cars in America simply don't have. I'm

even our versions are europe based.
they are quite refined in comparison to other small cars, but over here they are a bit more expensive too compared to KIA's Hyundai's etc

Hi Guys.

Fatboy, what Viva are you referring to ?

The Holden Viva, to be released very soon, is a Daewoo Lacetti with a better looking front & a new badge, shouldn't be a bad car for the money.

The only other Viva is the Vauxhall Viva, 1963 to 19
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

I'm referring to the new Viva. Here in the States, it's sold as a Suzuki Reno (see www.suzukiauto.com). I am looking at it compared to a Kia and a Hyundai. I can get an Elantra or Kia Spectra5 (Cerato in your neck of the woods perhaps?) for about US$15

So I decided: In the end I went with a Hyundai Elantra 5-door. I've had it a few days now, and I'm liking it more by the minute. It's just great. And here in the States (not sure about Oz), Hyundai gives a full 5 year/60,000 warranty and a 10 year/100

It's something bad car companies do here in the States to try to improve sales. And it works. And generally, if they can get their volume up enough, many of the problems go away because they have some capital to work with. The Korean automakers, Kia &
