Hi all,
I've been tidying up my HZ GTS for a sale but the last few weeks it's been running rich and seems to be getting worse. It's a 253 with WW stromberg which I recently got reco'd and has all the standard jets and tubes etc, choke is working fine, float level set correctly, basically the carby appears to be perfectly normal. The spark plugs are a little sooty but also are fairly recent, timing and points etc are also good. Everything you normally check seems to be as normal so what else is there!??
I've added a bottle of Nulon valve lifter additive as I thought maybe a valve is sticking and causing it to run rich even thought the set up is fairly lean. Anyone have some ideas, does it sound like a valve problem??
thanks,
Ben

Ben,

Do u know what the numbers are on these jets ? You have 2x idle jets (easy to read with air horn off), 2 mains (prob not touched as too hard to get at), and power valve (easy to read with air horn off), plus accel discharge nozzle (also easy to re

Thanks John,
I compared all nozzles with the Gregory's manual. Jets are stock 050, Power jet is 20/51, discharge nozzle is 068, idle tubes are 66. Ball bearings are still there and the car seems to idle nicely other than the strong fuel based exhaust. I

Ben,

Mains 050 are fine - I run 048 - lean
Discharge nozzle is more likely 089 - large number smaller hole - Standard
Idle at 66 is rich - try a 69 (haha) HQ 253 standard.
Pump valve at 020/51 are small holes so should be fine. A 032 is standard for

Try checking the top plate of the carby at the rear. It tends to warp and suck air. That could cause your flat spot. Happened to my WW on my 253. Try some WD40 or similar when its running and see if the idle changed. Cure was temporarily fixed b

Thanks for the tips Guys, I'll check out a few in the morning. Hopefully the faces aren't warped as they were machined with the recent reco but I'll check it's sealing. I'll also check out the pollution gear and EGR, all is hooked up properly so will see

Hi folks,
Fixed the problem! Idle tubes changed from size 66 to 69 and an instant fix. Still haven't had car around the block to test run but it has stopped blowing fuelly smoke out the exhaust.
thanks again guys :)
