Hi there, would appreciate any thoughts on problem as outlined following;
I have a 1969, 302 windsor, mildy worked, 600 v/s carby, alison electronic ignition system thru original dist, otherwise generally standard.
All fully rebuilt approx 15 yrs ago and with trouble free running till late last yr. Since then intemittent (what appears to be) electrical cutout. All is fine and suddenly no spark. Pull over and engine fires up. I have changed igniton resister (no better) and recently changed coil and have had success for a few weeks.
As off yesterday problem has re-occurred.
I have traced all wires, very basic system and all contacts appear to be sound.
I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks

Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Do you have a 3 or 4 year old alarm system with immobiliser in it?

It sounds spookily like a problem I had with my VS ute a few years ago. I'd be driving along and suddenly the fire would go out and the gauges would drop out (electronic da

It's ignition related. I'd check the ignition barrel, ignition module and make sure the coil wire isn't earthing. For example if you earth the "-" wire the car won't start.

Hi it Wayne here.
Thanks for your thoughts. The car doesnt have an immobiliser. Its just basic engine wiring. No frills on this beast, just the necessities..Doesn't even have a radio!!
I have spoken to a friend who thinks it maybe the ignition module.

Does anyone know if there is a way of testing the electronic ignition module? Its an Allison unit.

Cheers

I have previously had this problem on two firrerent vehicles and it was two different faults.

The first was a 1983 Nissan Exa Turbo. It ended up being a faulty distributor but no matter how many times I took it to an auto electrician they couldn'd fin

Had a similar problem in an XA many years ago. The car used to cut out when turning left. Turned out it was the coil shorting out inside. Replaced it and no more problems. Try another coil to eliminate any faults. You might have got a dud.

I have already fitted a new coil. Appeared to fix problem for a few months. Car doesnt do many miles...generally a few quick laps of an industrial block every Sunday morning...just to keep things going. It was suggested to put points back in and see if it

I meant that the new coil might be a dud. The way they mass produce things these days some faulty ones are bound to get through. Is it a resin filled bosch unit. Have had some problems with them in the past breaking down even when fairly new

The original and the replacement coil were both Bosch GT40R, oil filled coils. I originally had points in the dizzy, but it wasn't easy to adjust them, so I replaced points with electronic unit. Allison XR700 system which replaces points and condensor. ev

allison system is optical ??? any optical system that is 14 years old may go faulty due to life of led emitter and pickup units. Also solder points go 'dry'(and resistance will go high) reducing power to optical components (and thus reducing sensitivity

I removed allison unit from car. Prior to removal I did notice some overheating of cables adjacent to optical unit. The black insulation was semi charred in appearance. Upon removal I noticed lower side section of optical housing had deformed (heat relate

Hi Wayne,

That's good news that you found the source of your problem and it was a relatively inexpensive cure...

I don't know if you can still buy them, but Bosch used to put out an electronic points replacement unit. It fitted the original dizzy an
