Hi there. I hope someone can help me out, I seem to be using far too much fuel at least compared to other mates with more powerful V8's, my motor is a fairly stock 351 Clevland (XB GT) bored out 40 thou, flat top pistons, stock 2v heads but fitted with roller rockers, Edelbrock alloy manifold, and unknown cam - lumpier then stock XBGT item, Holly mechenical fuel pump, and windage tray, tranny is an FMX (i am aware they rob power) and 3.55 diff gears, I replaced a 650 cfm Edelbrock carby as it was leaking and i could not find replacement gaskets quickly with a 750 holly vac secondaries, this was worse then the Edelbrock as it had flatspots everywhere and 3 mechanics and a carby expert could never get it to work right, i then change dizzy to a Zenith electronic item but no difference (are these dizzies crap?), on the last trip to the nats i replaced the carby with a mates 600 holly, that reduced my fuel stops four fills to three, from Melb to Camberra, but it also halfed the performance, and it still drink more then my mates faster cars, the car is a cruiser and i rarely give it heap, the cam opens up at about 2900 rpm and i admit that at 100kph the rpm range it revs at about 3100rpm. and if i slow down i loose my cruise buddies, but it still drinks heaps at slower speeds, can someone solve this problem as i'm reluctant to take the coupe out with the current cost of fuel, I didn't build the motor and i think the combo might not be matched properly?. Any ideas?

The 3.55 gears might be some of the problem. have you thought of going to a 3.0? 351, FMX came out with the 2.75 as standard and the 3.0 as an option. Stay away from second hand carbies, they will just give you someone elses problems. The Edelbrock ca

Had you had the engine dyno tuned? A dyno operator will figure it out pretty quick.

G'day guys thanks for the feedback, i did have 2.75 originally, but decided to change to 3.55 for a bit more poke on take off, the fuel problem was obviously not as bad with those gears but it was still significant. The car idles well with a nice mild cam
