after fitting a replacement diff the ring gear whine has gone but I now have a high pitched whistling noise coming from passenger side rear wheel arch area. Also, a slight clunk/shudder occasionally comes from the rear when coasting to a complete stop- is this axle bearings? wheel bearings? universals? rear brakes? the clunk/shudder was there even before the diff was changed over, the whistling noise was not...Thanks for any suggestions.

should probably add that the clunk/shudder from coast to complete stop is alot more noticeable and concerning than the whistling(wind noise-like)noise...any ideas?

sounds like wheel bearings or possible worn brake assembly on that side. I had a similar poblem in a different vehicle. I ignored it too long and was changing lanes and entire axle pulled out of car and ran up the side of my vehicle and sat spinning wit

thanks Insaen- i'll look into the wheel bearings/brakes....any ideas on the (more worrying) clunk/shudder when coasting to a complete stop? universals? axle bearings? the auto? any suggestions welcome...

clunk/shudder - if your diff is new it sounds like the uni's, or maybe :0 some loose bolts...get under there and have a look, do you have an auto trans.?

thanks,70ute, yes its a trimatic/308..the people who fitted the diff reckon its the auto, the auto trans people suspect the diff spider gears or maybe the tailshaft itself- the universals were checked by them and they're OK..this clunk was also happening

I recall a friend of mine having a simalar problem i think his was related to his brake master cylinder, though i could be wrong will ask him and find out

thanks Glen, interesting that you raise the brakes as when the car was on the hoist the auto trans people noticed that the clunk was alot more pronounced when the brakes were applied...(they mentioned in passing the rear wheel cylinders) Would be great if

A clunk under acceleration, coming on / off the throttle, and coming to a stop could be the universals. An easy check is to get underneath and grab the driveshaft and try and twist it in either direction. If it is loose or you can hear a clunking noise

thanks Jabba, clunk/shudder only happens when coasting to a stop
(under brakes?)..its ok on accelaration/deceleration- the uni's seem ok but there is play at the diff housing yoke. I was hoping that the replaced diff would cure it but the clunk is much

Sounds silly, but check that the brakes are bolted on properly.

Had a Toymotor Corrosion where I started to get really bizzare wear pattern on the rear tyre (alternating between inside and outdise of tyre) and a clunk when I stopped. Jacked it up to

thanks, jabba will definitely check rear brake bolts..
something like that would explain why it happens under brakes and the auto trans people did notice it was alot worse under brakes...
