Since getting my 253 auto HQ sedan on the road I have had a vibration which comes in at 110 kph which is 3500 revs and goes out at about 120kph .I have done the following to fix this with no luck .2 tyre balances in 2 weeks, 2 different tailshafts balanced by 2 different companies , new universals ,New pinion bearings and seal, new carrier bearings in my lsd Salisbury, new axle bearings and seals , fully reconditioned trimatic with new torque converter and rear housing bush , another set of 4 road wheels , 4 new 30mm lowered springs , new shockies and plenty of bad language . I have run out of suggestions unless the vibration is coming from the engine which idles perfectly . Any suggestions pleeeese. HQLDEN |

You've covered most of the normal bases. Tyres out of round or have a bubble in the tread can cause this problem at about those speeds. Put it up on a hoist and spin the wheels and watch them go around from all angles. If they don't look straight, they Edited by user Tuesday, 4 October 2005 9:09:28 AM(UTC)

HQLden,
You must be running a BIG diff. My 2.78 is getting 2000-2200 rpm at 100kph. I cant imagine my 253 at 3500 yours must be ready to explode.
And another DUMB fix from me...dont do 110kph ! LOL.
Mate I havent a clue...but at 35 it sounds like

maybe it is wind resistance related? depending on the car, it could be the grill, roof racks, etc, though very unlikely. you have covered the obvious ones so im a little stumped. the water pump and fan could be it, but it would do it at that revs, in e

OK, so it is revs, rather than speed, related.
What has been known to cause this?
Broken/loose engine or box mounts.
Exhaust touching the body somewhere or hangers too tight.
Knackered transmission.
Loose flywheel/flexplate. Actually, that

Just thought of something else that may be pertinent.
You say you are doing 3½ grand at about 110 with a 3.08 diff? That doesn't add up, you should only be doing about 3 grand at that speed. How are you measuring the revs? If it is by a V8 tacho (there

HQLDEN,
Just a thought. Was the vibration apparent BEFORE you got the trans rebuilt??? Can you think of a time when the vibration wasn't there and you did something to the car??? May help to isolate the problem. We had a Ford van at work a few y

3500 at 110kms with a 308 diff(as posted here earlier) sounds very high ! A manual box will do around 2800-3000 at 110. The extra 500 rpm sounds odd. Check the trannie.

This is just a thought from a past bad experience but is the tailshaft the right length . ( I see you have had a couple of different ones though ). I had a 253 in my HX ute and it used to vibrate like that at 110 or so , turns out the tailshaft was about |

Hi Shawn, I thought that the poblem was the length of the tailshaft as a fair bit of the yoke was showing on the first one so I put one in which was about an inch longer which, coupled with a new rear gearbox bush did make a fair difference but the vibrat |

Are u sure u have a 3.08 diff ? LIke have u pulled the plate off the back and read the number ? Irrespective of various good points here...that 253 will die at that rev range !
Is your tacho right ? Genuine and calibrated ? One wrong connection and u

Sorry folks my last post ONLY refers to 3.55 ratios, not 3.36. Please replace 3.36 with 3.55, I need new glasses.

Hi John, we built the car up from a rolling body with a 253 and auto from a donor ute and the diff from a 350 HQ sedan which had been stolen and recovered . The motor has now had the top end done up but still the old crank, pistons, rings and harmonic balan |

My 202 in the tonner was doing 3000rpm at 110 and it had a mucher lower ratio diff than yours. I suggest your tacho may be out. A suggestion off left field, have you checked all the steering knuckles and joints? I have found in the past thatthese can cau

308 on the ring gear and 278 on the pinion???? sounds like a mix and match which is a no no in diffs. Crown wheel and pinion are definitely replace as a set items. Can you borrow a back end to swap over and see if it still does the vibration bit.

Try replacing the balancer as well with a new item. I found that the oter ring one I had on my chev had slipped round, and caused all manner of excitement.
