Hi all.
I have a HQ van which a mate and I just dumped a 308 in. She idles nicely, but whenever i give it a bit of juice it really farts and struggles as the secondary barrels kick in. It is also really hard to drive, ie. shudders and surges when going under 60 kmh. I think it has a lumpy cam, and I have a Celica 5 speed, and its running a straight gas carby. Not gas research, but another brand.
My question is, does it just need a good dyno tune from a gas performance place, or is it just the nature of the beast with a big cam. Maybe it needs a carby rebuild? I just want it to run smoothly.
Can anyone offer an opinion, or maybe suggest a good gas performance centre on the northern side of Melbourne?
Thanx for your help.

What donk was there b4 ? A 202 253 ? Would a 308 need more gas to make it run ? I dont know how those things work. Could be fuel, or igntion too..Maybe need leads or a good tune up.

It had a 253. Ive put in hotter gas leads etc, so I think it just needs to go to a gas performance place.

Dizzy isnt advancing? Dont forget the small vacuum hose to advance the timing as revs build up. Like Hainzy said, if the gas is rich yr exhaust will smell bad. Lean wont make it surge much.

I can't see a carby tuneup doing any good as it is on straight gas the carby jets would not be in use as the gas goes straight in through the throat. I would think it may be a bit lean, I know Wayne doesn't think so but I found with my gas setup when the

If the gas is too lean, it will backfire when you take off or put the foot down. That''s why I needed 3 new airboxes in my VN.

Thanks for your help guys. It would seem I just need the mixture adjusted professionally. It does shudder and backfire a bit, as well as smell a bit gassy. I have electronic ignition too, so Ill check out BLUHJ's suggestion of the gas conversions place in

Hainzy,
Speak to Stuart? Shane? What he doesn't know is'nt worth knowing. They tune it on a dyno as well. Not just a static tune.
Sounds like it could be a bit rich on the idle but lean on the power.
