At the moment I have a 253 in a hg panelvan and am planning on putting a 308 in her, but was wondering if I have to take the heater box out to have the 308, or can I leave the box in.

The blocks are the same so it will fit right in. Just make sure the bolt pattern for the bellhousing is the same or you will either have to change the box as well or get an adapter plate.

Just to expand on bluHJ's comment, 308's come in two different gearbox bolt patterns. All HT/G/Q 308 blocks are the same as a 253, called 4-speed or trimatic pattern. HJ-HZ and VB red motor blocks are either 4-speed pattern (for 3 and 4 speed manuals) OR
