Hi guys,
I've always liked the look of the early xr-xy fords and now I've gone and bought one. It's a 6 cylinder, 3-on-the-tree XR sedan in primer but complete and straight with 12 slots.
I'm now looking at my options for souping it up a little. I suspect I'll probably go down the V8 on gas route as I want a daily driver that won't break the bank with petrol being $1.40/litre. It has drums all around so what option do I have for upgrading brakes? I'd need a v8 front end? what about fitting later model front disks? I heard about some place called RSS (I think) that does a bolt in steering replacement that's supposed to be quite good, anyone had any experiences with them or their kits? For an engine I see that the clevo's are quite common however I seem to remember that the Windsor was a more desirable motor? 289/302 or 351 ? I"d like to keep a manual..so 4 speed?, 5 speed? What are the options for fitting later model ford gear like gearboxes, brakes etc? As far a rear ends go, stick with a 9" or what about the 8" that also seem quite common?
Sorry guys but the last 3 cars I've done have all been Holdens so I'm still getting up to speed with the Ford world.
Also, what are the dramas with fitting late model EFI V8 motors? I fitted a EFI 308 to an HG Monaro a while ago and it was straight forward after sourcing the right sump+pickup. How about Fords?, do you need different sumps depending on model?, any other things I've left out that need to be looked at? Oh, I would like to run 4 wheel disks and 17" wheels...is that something that poses major headaches?

Thanks in advance guys...appreciate it!

All that you want to do can be done and is all relatively straight forward....If you hase the budget to do it :)

Brakes are simly a matter of changing to later x series falcon disk brake front spindles, brakes etc (XC - XF) you could even go the RRS wa

If you go putting an injected V8 in there are several types basically. The EB/ED one which would go straight in. An early EB one is the easiest because you won't have Smartlock to deal with & the sump will fit. You will just have to get yourself a new pai

Well HTB if you did that all would fit ok except that you would need XR-XY V8 engine mount towers as the XA-XE ones are higher & would lift you engine up too much. The XA-XD diff will fit but is about 2 inches wider than an XR-XY diff so you may be introd

Thanks for your insight Jim and the heads up on the engine mounts and Diff!!!
The only other query that I can see being a inssue was the compatability and dicking around involved in crossing over the front disc brake set up.

No dicking around is involved with fitting the whole disc/stub assembly to your XR the issues arrive in trying to fit the brake booster to your firewall. It has been done though.

Some people say I am out of shape but they are wrong.....Round is a shape.

hey guys xr fairmont came out with square indicator lights, the reason they are so expensive is because the whole tailight assembly was different for a fairmont to a falcon ie you couldnt put fairmont lenses on falcon buckets or just use the fairmont indi

Your cheapest option would be to buy a donor car with disc brake front, V8 engine and a 9 inch. Get your heads done to suit gas.
Fairlanes make good donor cars but most are autos. Clevos and Windsors are both good engines and both have there good and bad
