Hi all,
I have a dual fuel 308 blue motor fitted in my HZ wagon. It's a Sprintgas system and works quite well, very little difference on gas or petrol it seems when you change between the two. Problem is when towing a heavy load (ie a 1 tonne full size caravan). I would have thought the car would have pulled the van fairly easily, however it seemed to struggle on hills badly and returned woeful economy on gas (down from 380-400km per tank to 200km per tank) and that's a 70 useable litre tank. It also ran quite warm, even when it wasnt a hot day (but runs nice and cool without any load). I had fully serviced the car (points, plugs, leads, new coil, oil Penrite HPR 30), adjusted the timing to favour gas (around 10-12 degrees BTDC)) and as I said it just seems not to be very lively. I wish I could compare it's 'go' with a similar car, ie 308 T400 wagon, to see if mine is down on what it should be, but I don't know anyone around Albury/Wodonga with one. Anyway it doesn't use oil either, having only been reconditioned around 20,000kms ago. I'm thinking a stretched timing chain, incorrect cam timing, or maybe the cam is incorrect for the car (no idea on the specs, I assume it's standard blue motor). Am I on the right track, or can you suggest any other options. Oh it's a 2 into one single 3 inch system using the original manifolds still. I have a set of Perry extractors and a dual 2 or 2.5 inch exhaust (ex 253 HZ) would this help??
Thanks
Peter

I get around 200kM per 60L of gas all the time with a 308 TH400 in my HZ 1-tonner Overlander. To get an engine to work as efficiently as possible with LPG (spark, cam, compression etc) it won't run on petrol very well. The dizzy curve needs to be very di |

Hi Peter, Have you checked the vacuum advance is OK? I remember when I first got my WB Caprice I used to get quite bad fuel economy on both petrol and gas. Replaced the vacuum advance unit and it improved the fuel economy from about 300km/tank to 450km.

Thanks guys, yes it is a compromise with dual fuel, I'll have a chat to our local gas guys. The dizzy is a 253 one (my oiginal one had excess shaft play) and the advance is working fine, did they run a different advance unit to a 308 (thinking out loud h |

You won't get the same performance out of gas as you will with petrol. Gas has less calories per litre. My next door neighbour had a Falcon and a Maverick on dual fuel from new and the gas consumption and power were always down. especially the Maverick yo

I've had gas powered cars since 1989 and always found that you would go through a heap of gas once you started towing.
