here's a question to prove there are no stupid questions only stupid people...;)
i understand the workings of the different types of lifters used with a solid or hydraulic cam and the more specific use for each type, but what's the basic difference between the camshafts themselves? are the profiles actually different for a certain application? if so, is the unique profile used to gain more control of a certain type of lifter/rocker? or is 'solid' just another term for 'high performance' meaning a solid lifter is required solely because of an aggressive profile...?

Hydraulic and solid cams have a slightly rounded surface shape to get the lifter to rotate as they go up and down. The roller cams are ground flat rather than slightly rounded. So don't use roller lifters on hydralic cams and vice versa.
