Ok I've decided a reconditioned engine may not be the best option. What would anyone consider in terms of a newer model motor for the VL? I'm after a 6 cyl EFI and preferably the simplest to install whilst keeping the budget reasonably low.

do you mean you don't want to refit an rb30 to a VL? imho it's already a great motor for an early commodore and seeing as you need to keep the budget small(ish) it would be your best option.
unless you want to fit another higher power jap motor (like rb2
