How do I check the bonafides of the identity of a HQ Statesman, especially whether or not it is a factory fitted 350 etc. Is there a number to call with Holden, do they archive this type of info so you can trace the history of a car? Any info much appreciated.

Send me the ID plate details and I'll suss it out for you. 1973 and late 1972 cars will say L30 in the engine code section of the BODY plate, plus have a U on the VIN ie 8x69U....

Hi Guys.

If the VIN begins with 'DHQ' then it will be late enough to have the Eng/Trans/R.Axle codes on the bottom line of the body plate.

It should read L30 (350 V8)/M41 (TH400)/G92 (2.78 diff) if it is an original 350 HQ Statesman.

DHQ03470 T is the chassis number not the VIN. In an HQ the VIN is the small skinny tag on the firewall. Also the letter T is incorrect, the last letter in the chassis number is the first letter of the capital city of the state the car was manufactured. It

Warren,
The car was manufactured in Adelaide, it was exported to South Africa. The paper work I have is all original from GMH, including the import papers back into Australia. It is a Chevrolet Caprice 350, was never referred to as a Holden on any of the

Hi ozchezy.

We've been thru this VIN/Chassis number bit before. The NSW RTA refer to it as the VIN/Chassis number, because from around 1990 onwards the chassis is the VIN (or more correctly ISOVIN) for all cars not just Holdens. However before 1990 the

Hi Dr Terry,
Your explaination is some what of a mistery and made me pull out all the paperwork for my car. From the "T" query of the VIN, if I can call it that, I do believe it was a code for Model Caprice, and "S" was for model De Ville.
As my vehicl

Hi ozchevy.

Yes, the T in the VIN is Caprice & the S is Statesman
Deville etc, but the DHQ number is not the VIN, it's the chassis number. In the chassis number the last letter is the code for the plant of production.

I think the reason they don't

Yes the Statesman here is not a Holden either it is a GM Statesman. The first Holden Statesman is the either the WB or VQ.

The HQ parts catalogue has HQ Holden and Statesman parts catalogue on the front. The brochure and paint card are also diferent, a

Hi Warren,
When I mentioned the figure of 668, I was referring to the build number that were badged as Caprices for the South African market only, I believe there were several thousands sent as Statesman 350's as the base models to Trinidad, Canada, and

I would be interested in where this number comes from, not that I am saying it is not true, but Holden cannot supply firm numbers on a lot of the vehicles they made.

They would have know at some time, after all they need to know what htey are selling

Hi again Warren,
I actually owe the info I have from GMH to a man I met, and long time friend from ebay who has recently passed away, he was GMH's top marketing and promotion guru in Melbourne. (God rest your soul Phil Lockman) He spent a very long time

Yes to the untrained eye the export and O/S assembled cars are different.

I like the HKs with their two piece bumpers and painted engine bays. They also look different with the blue flame engine.

There is an article in a wheels magazine on the expor
