G'day guys, Need some help with adjusting the single post rockers on my 186. It is my basic understanding that you don't adjust them using a clearance, and work off the nut torque and sound (lash/ rattle), is this right??? the current process I have used is, run engine to normal operating temp, turn off engine, remove rocker cover, start engine, adjusting one cylinder (intake/exhaust) at a time loosen rocker arm nuts until they both just start to rattle, then tighten until the valve opens and you can hear the engine pitch change or start to stall, find midway point between the two, repeat for all remaining rockers. If this process sounds totally stuffed up please let me know. The repair book i have has nothing about replacing these from scratch, only to tighten them down to a torque and adjust them 1/2 - 1 full turn past the no lash limit. If i did this the engine would either stall or totally change pitch. Since my gear isn't exactly new, there must be a differance procedure from new to old (worn) gear. As you can see I need a bit of help in this area from someone in the know. Also, another quick question, My engine is missing under load at low and high range revs. My points are set to 20" (19"-24") and WW carby set correct, can't see a problem with fuel, apart from only getting 350km out of 70L tank hmmmm. Any ideas on possible fix?????

These are 3 steps that I follow, when adjusting or replacing rocker arms on my 186s.

thanks george, this method sounds good, although I am concerned that 3/4 of a turn past lash is too far. When i go from 3'oclock to around 6-7 'oclock the engine really stumbles and rattles around, I am afraid that i will do damage or stop the engine fr

I was told by a guy at Repco on way home to tighten the rockers only enough to eliminate chatter, not any more or else I will run the risk of opening valves... Can an engine miss under load when they are either not tightened enough or too much???

There is a way to do it where you dont end up with oil all over your engine bay / driveway, and worked pretty well for me (admittedly on a SBC, and it took a few goes to get the hang of it).

Cheers Jabba, Last night I tightned rockers down to zero lash, then gradually down in 1/4 turn movements. I tried 1/2 a turn initially, but the engine seemed very jumpy and hesitated intermittently and stalled twice, so I reduced that to only 1/4 turn.

I own a 179HP (with 186 bore) and have the same head setup as your motor does. I have done my rockers many a time and tell you now that 1 full turn after rattling stops is TOO much. You only need to turn them 1/4 of a turn after the rattling stops. You

I used to work for a Holden dealer when the 179 and 186 was new. We just backed off the nut until the rocker rattled, tightened it until the rattling stopped then gave the nut one turn but not by the same amount, i.e. a 1/4 turn or whatever, each time.
