My HZ with a 253 V8 started blowing white smoke, I haven't had a look at it yet but I thought you guys might have some ideas?
The engine's in good nick but is due for a service.
My initial thought is that one of the spark plugs may not be firing properly - it had run a bit rough a couple of weeks ago, like one cylinder wasn't firing. I wondered if I'd clogged a plug from over-use of valve-saver fluid.
Would it be blowing white smoke on acceleration in this case?
I will fix it on the weekend, just thought you guys may have some pointers.

My 202 started blowing white smoke and running rough as it blew Number 2 ring. After 29 years and 200,000km, I figured it wasn't a bad run, and had the whole thing rebuilt.
Hope yours isn't that drastic, though - from what you say it's running ok now,

Check your oil and water for funny colours or bubbles while you're at it, to make sure you don't have head gasket problems. If there is no cross-contamination there, keep going as per above.

per Ozjason,
If white it could be water vapour. grey blue could be fuel, oil should be black. OR it could be trannie fluid if you have a trimatic.
Therefore, are u using lotsa fuel ? Is your oil level, water level(radiator), or trannie fluid droppin

White smoke is possibly either oil or water. Try holding a white rag folded thickly over the exhaust while the motor is running for a few minutes then check if it is damp. If damp is most likely water. If a darker colour or oily smelling is oil. Also if w

The smoke is definately white.
I started it up friday night to have a look - no smoke! I took it for a run and no probs. But when I took it on a longer run on the weekend and got it properly hot the problem came back. It was harder to start when hot an

Before you drive any further even before you turn the key again - CHECK the BLOODY transimssion fluid !!! COLD WILL DO !! Is there any there ??
Now go for a drive for 15-20 mins , then check the fluid with the engine running in PARK. Still

I'd definately check the traumatic box-i had the same with a 186,was ready to pull the motor out and replace with another 186. discovered the vacuum modulator was cactus Jack. would only start smoking when warmed up. |

I'm with cLASSIC oZ n Trebrsnb on this one, As a 3rd Year Apprentice, I had a Boss who charged a Mercedes Driver $400 to change a Kick-Down Diaphragm on his Auto. The plugs adjacent to the vacuum modulator seem ok, and it's not loosing transmission oil.
A quick look at number 3 cylinder shows an oily plug and I can see wet oil on the top of the piston. It is using water and the radiator has a brown caked substan |

So the tri is OK..now for the heads. Doesnt sound too serious. Buy you do have a bad 3 ?
I have checked my REPCO notes that came with my car and if the manifold is not tensioned correctly, and has a bad manifold to head seal, YOU WILL get an oily plug

OK, we're getting there!
I will first do a compression check, although I suppose a leaking manifold would give the same drop in compression as a head gasket?
I will then remove manifold, check and re-seal. We're talking about the INLET manifold, rig |

A leaking inelt manifold will not give a drop in compression. When you are checking the compression, the valves are shut, and that closes off the inlet and exhaust manifolds.

Thanks Jabba. So if my compression is ok it's not the head gasket and could still be the manifold.
I have some of that Hylomar, it's good stuff. I have also used and orange high-temp sealant for manifolds in the past.

Nicko,
Also, remember to do a compression check with the throttle WIDE open, and all plugs out. It gives a consistant reading.
AND - if # 3 is black. Have you measured the spark plug lead on #3 ? Any misfires/misfiring ??

Just to update this thread:
Vacuum modulator was replaced but this didn't fix it. A hydrocarbon test showed a blown gasket. It was a cracked head - 3 inch crack.
