I have a small problem with the starter on the J. It's OK when the engine is cold or the weather is not too hot, but after a run, if I leave it for 5 or 10 minutes, it cranks like a flat battery. I have relayed the start circuit so I am getting a full 12 volts to the starter. The majority of wiring on the whole car was replaced about 4 years ago. Extractors are fitted, so could it be excessive heat? Faulty ignition switch? What can I do? All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
thanks...bluHJ

A common problem on Holden V8's (and 6 cyls with extractors).
Check your brushes in the starter. When they wear down, and the starter is hot (everything expands) the brushes don't QUITE make proper contact with the armature. When the starter cools down

Thanks Dave but the starter was reco about 18 months ago. The battery leads are about 12 months old and clean contacts. The timing is about 10 degrees for the gas. My first bet was the heat as well. Do you think a reduction drive starter might help

I have had similar probs with the 253. It was loose-ish connections on the starter motor. It was well past fingertight, but a spanner made a real good connection.

Before you get all drastic...try some heat-wrap or make up a shield that hangs off the starter bolts to shield it from the extractors (Like the VL's have on the passenger's side of the engine bay to shield something or other...).
Cheers...Dave

Thought of the heat wrap Dave but I'm on night shift at the moment and really don't feel like doing much. I don't really like the crackle of the extractors and have been thinking of getting rid of them anyway. Trublu, Good thought but they are tight.

Another non-mechanical suggestion is the battey itself. My ute used to do exactly the same thing (albeit with a 400 SBC). When hot, very little crank.
I heat wrapped the starter motor and solenoid, and that did help a little. I then put in a reduc |

Thanks Jabba. I didn't think of that but I know the alternator is OK. Its a near new 90 amp unit. Battery is about 18 months old (also a 650 cca) but will get it checked.

Andrew, Couple points on the battery... I had a six month old 600CCA truck battery in the Torana (I love my big batteries). Took the car off the road for a year, then put it back in. Wasn't completely happy with the battery performance, so I took it Edited by user Monday, 12 December 2005 7:55:48 PM(UTC)

Thanks Jason. As I said to Dave, I'm on night shift at the moment and really don't feel like doing anything. I've got about 25mm between the extractors and the starter solenoid. Not a lot of space. I'll probably do the exhaust anyway on Friday.
