G'day all,
My tonner has an M22 gearbox and a 4.44 ratio diff, and I was wondering if I change the gearbox ratio(I dont like the M22 ratios because you have to almost bounce the ****in' valves in third and then when you drop into 4th the bloody thing nearly dies the gap is that wide!)will I need to change the diff ratio as well and is there a particular formula to work it out with or something? maybe a celica 5 speed will eliminate this problem? any advice appreciated. Thanks.Russ

a 5 speed would be a great idea as the spacing between gears is much nicer, and the overdrive will go a looong way to help claw back what must be a lot of $$$ spent on petrol tax with that 4.44 diff, i hope you don't do too much highway driving.

FYI I was talkiin to a work colleague a few years back that used to work in the Adelaide Holden Factory in the 70's and 80's and he told me they used to put 4.44 diffs in a lot of the commercial vehicles destined for country areas because the cocky's used

Hi Russ,

Yes, there is a formula to work out how box and diff ratios work together.

You ca find it here: http://www.oldholden.com/possible/index.php/Maths

Your tyre size also plays a part in your overall gearing too.

The standard diff for a to

Standard 1-tonner diff ratios varied between 3.36, 3.55 and 4.44. Normally the 4.44 was only fitted to 173ci M15 and M20 vehicles, with the 3.55 fitted to most autos, 253's and 6cyl with M22. 308 powered tonners normally had 3.36 diffs.

Anyway, back to
