Hi guys i need some help and/or advice. My chev was rebuilt in feb 2004 i have only driven it approx 150-200km's only giving it a couple of squirts here and there. I kept most of the engine the way it was, but replacing the pistons +40, a solid cam, solid lifters, posi locks, and valve stem seals. all fitted and put together by a performance mob. When sitting in the garage i give it a turn over approx once every 10 days for a couple of mins just to keep the oil going through etc. Last time i took it out i let it warm up and took it up and down the road a couple of times, I took off got half way through 2nd gear and just wanted to stop until i put it in neutral give it a couple of pumps and would come to life again but was running a bit rough. I thought it was the holley so I put a carby kit through it and tried again but still the same and noticed some light smoke coming out the back and thought the carby was running to lean. so then i thought i'd replace the plugs and leads, so i took out the plugs and they have oil on them. what could this be. any info would be greatly appreciated.
(sorry for so much info but maybe it might help solve the problem).

Did you drain the fuel tank and put new fuel in it before you started to drive it. If you did not you may have realy stale fuel in it and you need to clean it out including the fuel lines.

no i havent replaced the fuel i put in $20 about 4-5 months ago. but the oil on the plugs are black as. But i will replace the fuel, clean out the line and give it a try, it cant hurt. hope it works fingers crossed.

You may have to clean out the carby again to and change any fuel filters on the car.

Also you have not done enough running to allow all the moving parts to wear in. Oil consumption is quite likely to be high until you have run it in properly and done maybe 1000 or 2000k. the rings won't be sealing yet and will allow oil on to the plugs.

When you say 150 - 200klms is that 150-200 thousand klms.

I've had a hard time on a couple of occasions getting my engines to bed in. (383 & 377chevs)
It's hard to load them for any amount of time while driving legally. They generally run at about 17 -19" vacuum at 120kph, on only a fraction of throttle and not

hi guys thanks for your replies, as for the oil being sooty it is actually liquid oil so i guess it could be the rings, but why now after driving a couple a hundred k's does it start happening. Why not before. I'm still going to get new plugs and fuel tom

You could try running hotter plugs for a while. Don't run in at constant speed you will glaze the bores make more trouble. City driving is good for running in because you vary the speed, it does need some loading though do not load a new motor by running

Hi guys just an update, i put in fresh plugs and fuel took her out and give her a run up and down the street a couple of times normal and it was fine, then give it a bootfull and 2nd time round same problem again but not as bad so i pulled her in the gara

most guys that rebuild a motor and then leave it in the shed have the same problem it usualy turns out to be that it hasnt been run in to seal the rings you should take it out for at least a couple of hundred k's of driving at the start remember to vary t |

The main thing when running a motor in is to make sure you use a non friction modified oil and to alter load/speed on the engine and and do not over rev it.As the other guys have said already.
